Gen Z Onboarding Guide for Credit Unions

Young Gen Z couple opening a bank account together on a smartphone

Gen Z is the first fully mobile-native banking cohort. They won't tolerate branch visits, faxed documents, or 10-minute forms — and they'll abandon an account application in under 60 seconds if it feels slow. This guide is the playbook Cotribute uses with credit unions and community banks to win Gen Z members.

1. Mobile-first application, not a mobile-friendly one

The primary application is designed for a 375px screen. Every field is thumb-reachable. No desktop-only fallbacks. Application completion on mobile should exceed 65%.

2. Fund the account in the same session

ACH linking, debit card push, or Apple Pay / Google Pay funding is offered inline — not as a follow-up email. Funded-at-open rate should exceed 75% for Gen Z applicants.

3. ID verification that doesn't feel like TSA

Automated document + selfie verification, with a fraud model that clears low-risk applicants without manual review. Manual review should be reserved for genuine risk signals, not every 22-year-old.

4. Cross-sell built into onboarding

The first product is checking. The second (savings or credit-builder) is offered in the same session with pre-filled data. Peer benchmarks show 40%+ take rate on the second product when offered inline.

5. Straight-through to core

The account is booked to Symitar / KeyStone / DNA / Premier without a manual re-key. The member has a debit card and mobile-banking access within 24 hours.
